Mercado Libre registers Balse, its own fashion brand, in six countries
Mercado Libre registered Balse, a new fashion brand covering clothing, footwear and accessories, in six Latin American countries. A private label gives it more control over pricing, margins and assortment. For brands selling on marketplaces, the platform also becomes a competitor in the same category.
Mercado Libre registered a new fashion brand called Balse in Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile and Peru. The filing covers clothing, footwear and accessories.
Until now, Mercado Libre has mainly sold other companies’ brands on its platform. A private label gives it more control over pricing, margins and assortment, while also keeping the customer relationship inside its own platform.
Registering the brand in six countries points to ambitions beyond a single-market experiment, although it does not necessarily mean all six will launch at the same time.
The timing is interesting. Shein and Temu have expanded aggressively in low-price fashion across Latin America, while Mercado Libre already has the traffic, payments and logistics infrastructure in place.
For brands selling through marketplaces, the bigger question is what happens when the platform is no longer only the channel, but also owns a competing brand in the same category.
