Chipotle opened its first restaurant in Mexico, with partner Alsea
Chipotle opened its first restaurant in Mexico in July 2026, near Monterrey, with Alsea, which runs more than 4,800 units in 12 countries. It is one location out of more than 4,100 worldwide, a proof of concept. In Latin America, the first store decides more than the tenth.
Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in Mexico last month near Monterrey. One location. The partner is Alsea, which already runs more than 4,800 units in 12 countries, including Starbucks, Domino's and Burger King.
Chipotle has more than 4,100 restaurants worldwide and opened exactly one in Mexico, calling it a proof of concept. The Alsea deal was signed in April 2025, so they spent over a year preparing before opening that single door.
One restaurant against thousands
Most brands entering Latin America do the opposite: pick three cities at once, launch fast, then spend a year figuring out which one actually works. Chipotle picked the right partner first and let one store prove the model before writing the expansion plan.
In Latin America, the first store decides more than the tenth. Distribution and local execution are not shortcuts you buy later.
