McKinsey: demand for AI skills in Latin America grew 11x in two years
Demand for AI skills in Latin America grew 11x in two years, twice as fast as in the US and Europe, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. Companies are all looking for the same people. For most, the more realistic path is training the team they already have.
McKinsey published a report this month on how AI is changing work in Latin America. What surprised me most was the demand for AI skills. It grew 11x in two years, twice as fast as in the US and Europe, and it is now the fastest growing skill in the region's job market.
That does not mean the talent is already here. It means companies are all looking for the same people, and there are not enough of them.
I have led sales teams across Latin America for years and I see this all the time. The company buys the tool, announces it, and six months later almost nobody uses it. Not because the tool is bad, but because nobody helped the team change the way they work.
That is why I think the bigger opportunity is training the people you already have. It is slower, but for most companies in the region it is probably the more realistic path.
So before opening a new position, maybe the question is simpler. Is your team actually using what you already paid for?
